Those games should provide significant insight into the Guardians’ plans for this season, particularly regarding the potential Opening Day lineup. Several prospects will be trying to make their mark in order to make the final roster.
Among the most notable is second baseman Travis Bazzana. The No. 1 overall pick from the 2024 MLB Draft, Bazzana has had his MLB arrival delayed by multiple oblique injuries, though he looks to be in line to finally make his debut this season.
However, because he will represent his native Australia in the World Baseball Classic, he will miss time at major league camp and some of these games. Hopefully, the experience will serve him well when he returns to the Guardians and allows him to push to make the team.
One young player whose status is not in doubt is outfielder Chase DeLauter. After making his MLB debut last postseason, he is expected to make his regular-season debut as soon as Opening Day.
Another scenario to keep an eye on during spring training is the development of the starting pitchers. Last season, manager Stephen Vogt went to a six-man rotation, which provided additional opportunities. Now, those six pitchers could be battling to make a more traditional five-man unit, so it will be interesting to see who will emerge.
Watching how the new-look lineup comes together will also be an interesting indicator of how the 2026 season might play out.
