Jo Adell has officially cracked national recognition as one of the most impactful players dealt at this year’s trade deadline, landing at number six on MLB.com’s ranking of the ten most significant additions league-wide.
Brian Murphy compiled the list roughly one month removed from the deadline, evaluating which players have delivered the biggest returns for their new clubs since changing addresses. Cleveland actually made two notable additions before the deadline passed, bringing in left-hander Foster Griffin to bolster a rotation that already featured ace Gavin Williams and standout rookie Parker Messick. But according to Murphy, the more pressing need heading into the deadline was offensive production, and that is exactly what Adell has provided since arriving in Cleveland.
“What the Guardians really needed at the Deadline was more offensive firepower. Adell has brought that as he’s posted 11 extra-base hits and an .815 OPS through 24 games. Adell has been even better of late, slashing .327/.383/.527 over his previous 14 games. Prior to Adell’s arrival, Cleveland ranked 27th in wRC+ (92). Since his first game on Aug. 4, they are tied for 11th in that stat (103),” Murphy wrote.
Murphy backed up that claim with the numbers. Adell has racked up 11 extra-base hits to go along with an .815 OPS through his first 24 games in a Cleveland uniform, and his production has only trended upward as the weeks have passed. Over his most recent 14 games, Adell has posted a slash line of .327 batting average, .383 on base percentage and .527 slugging percentage, numbers that place him among the more productive hitters in baseball over that stretch. Murphy also referenced a six RBI performance from Adell that occurred in the middle of that surge, noting that only Angel Martinez had accomplished something similar for Cleveland over the previous three seasons.
The impact of Adell’s arrival extends beyond his individual numbers as well. Murphy pointed out that before Adell joined the roster, Cleveland ranked 27th in the league in weighted runs created plus, a metric that measures overall offensive production relative to league average. Since his debut on August 4th, the Guardians have climbed all the way up to a tie for 11th in that same category, a jump that reflects just how significantly one addition can shift the entire complexion of a lineup.
Adell finished just ahead of several other notable names included on the list, including Yankees infielder Luis Garcia Jr. and Dodgers ace Tarik Skubal, the reigning two-time Cy Young Award winner who found himself ranked lower than several other pitchers despite his star power.
With Cleveland continuing to chase both a Wild Card berth and a potential run at the American League Central crown, Adell’s emergence as one of baseball’s most productive deadline pickups has become one of the more important storylines fueling the team’s push into September.
