The Cleveland Guardians received a great deal of good fortune in getting the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft. But with it comes a great deal of pressure as well, as Travis Bazzana is about to find out.
Following a series of oblique injuries that have delayed his arrival, Bazzana is expected to make his MLB debut this season, perhaps as early as Opening Day. Whenever he does take the field for the Guardians, he will have to prove that he was indeed worthy of that valuable choice.
That is why insider Zack Meisel said the top Guardians prospect is facing an “important year” in 2026.
“A handful of players who were selected after him have already reached the majors (and in the case of AL Rookie of the Year Nick Kurtz, have thrived) or have soared up the prospect rankings (Konnor Griffin is widely considered the top prospect in the sport). It’s an important year for Bazzana to stamp his arrival and affirm that the Guardians made the right choice in their first top-pick assignment,” Meisel wrote.
Back in 2024, despite having just a 2 percent chance to get the No. 1 pick, the Guardians won the second-ever MLB draft lottery to jump eight other teams into the top spot. In fact, they were even luckier than it might appear, as the Washington Nationals initially won the pick but were ineligible to receive it based on revenue-sharing rules.
With the first No. 1 pick in franchise history, Cleveland selected Bazzana, an Australian infielder who played at Oregon State. In doing so, the Guardians passed on Athletics first baseman Kurtz, the No. 4 pick who hit 36 home runs with a .290 batting average in his debut season, and Pittsburgh Pirates shortstop Griffin, the No. 9 choice who is the top-ranked prospect by MLB.com entering 2026 (Bazzana is 20th).
Bazzana should be given an excellent chance to make a case for himself this season. First, he will represent Australia in the World Baseball Classic, which should provide some valuable experience. Then, if he doesn’t miss too much time at spring training and can avoid injury, he likely will be given every chance to become the Guardians’ starting second baseman.
Not only will he have to live up to the billing as a No. 1 pick, but he will also be counted on to give Cleveland’s offense a much-needed boost as it attempts to win a third straight AL Central title.
