The Cleveland Guardians were in desperate need of a win on Wednesday afternoon.
There would be no tomorrow, so Stephen Vogt needed to have his best man on the mound.
At least, his best man to face the Tigers.
As pointed out by Chris Castellani on X, Tanner Bibee had been utterly dominant against A.J. Hinch’s team this season.
Prior to Wednesday’s start, he had posted a 3-0 record with a 0.95 ERA and a 0.895 WHIP.
Those numbers were significantly better than what he did against everybody else (9-11 record with a 4.63 ERA and 1.267 WHIP).

To say that this has been a disappointing season for Bibee would be a massive understatement.
Then again, he’s still one of the best players on the team, and he will hopefully have another chance to redeem himself in the playoffs.
Bibee gave Stephen Vogt’s team the type of strong outing they needed, allowing just one run in five hits over 4.2 innings of work.
He also had three walks and six strikeouts.
The Guardians will now roll with Slade Cecconi for their most important game of the season to date.
The Tigers will counter with Jack Flaherty.
Of course, anything can happen in the playoffs, especially in a win-or-go-home situation, and the Guardians will need to take it as seriously as possible.
However, after watching them dominate the Tigers frequently and knowing that the Tigers’ bullpen is one of the worst in the game, they must feel quite confident ahead of Thursday afternoon’s matchup.
