Parker Messick continues to somewhat defy logic during his first full MLB season for the Cleveland Guardians. With just 19 career starts to his name, including 12 this year, he has proven to be one of the biggest surprises in the game.
Messick made his MLB debut last August as the Guardians were looking for someone to help them fill out an unorthodox six-man rotation that they deemed necessary to deal with a difficult stretch of consecutive games. The left-hander did better than anyone could have hoped, going 3-1 with a 2.72 ERA in his seven appearances.
This season, after emerging from spring training with a secure spot in the five-man rotation, Messick has been even better, going 6-1 with a 2.21 ERA. He is doing all of this without any overwhelming physical gifts, instead relying on a wide repertoire of pitches and an impressive mound presence.
But thanks to the results, the Guardians pitcher has earned a nod that puts him among the best at his position, with Bleacher Report ranking him as the No. 7 starting pitcher who is 25 years old or younger.
“There’s a stat at FanGraphs called ‘Stuff+’ that effectively measures the quality of a pitcher’s offerings. And according to this stat, Parker Messick’s stuff is short of average (100) with a score of 96. And yet, his results don’t lie about how much he’s been mowing hitters down in 2026. All his key performance indicators skew toward above-average, including his walk and strikeout rates and basically all measures of contact quality,” Zachary D. Rymer wrote.
It is an impressive list of talent that is topped by Paul Skenes of the Pittsburgh Pirates at No. 1, followed by Jacob Misiorowski of the Milwaukee Brewers and Cam Schlittler of the New York Yankees. For Messick, who turned 25 in October, it is a notable recognition among his peers.
This season, in 69.1 innings, Messick has 74 strikeouts and 21 walks, a K/BB ratio of 3.5. Last year, it was even better, with 38 strikeouts and just six walks over 39.2 innings for a 6.3 rate.
Most importantly, the Guardians rarely lose when he is on the mound. They are 9-3 in his 12 starts this season and had won four in a row until a loss to the Boston Red Sox on Saturday, even though Messick gave up just one run over five innings.
Still considered a rookie because he did not pitch 50 innings last season, Messick is in line for his first All-Star Game selection and is a contender for AL Rookie of the Year, which will make each of his starts interesting to watch.
