Parker Messick has had a strong run of starts to open the 2026 season for the Cleveland Guardians. Among the highlights, he took a no-hitter into the ninth inning against the Baltimore Orioles on April 16, which was his fourth start of the season and just the 11th of his MLB career.
Now, he has added yet another strong performance to his burgeoning resume. On Sunday, the left-hander held the powerful Philadelphia Phillies scoreless for 5.2 innings, allowing five hits and two walks with six strikeouts, including a crucial one against Bryce Harper, in a 3-0 win.
It is the latest proof that Messick is doing something that demands national attention right now, producing a season that deserves serious consideration for AL Rookie of the Year.
“Parker Messick so far in his rookie season: 11 GS, 6-1, 2.24 ERA, 70 K: 19 BB. ROY?” Andrew DeCeglie posted.

It is reasonable to suggest that Messick should also be considered a contender for the AL Cy Young Award. He is second in the league with six wins, fourth in ERA, sixth in innings pitched (64.1), sixth in strikeouts (70), and tied for eighth in WHIP (1.04). Messick could be in line to start the All-Star Game, with Cam Schlittler of the New York Yankees his most notable challenger.
Messick made his major league debut on Aug. 20, 2025. As part of a six-man rotation, the Guardians used to deal with a long stretch of games without an off day, he went 3-1 with a 2.72 ERA in seven appearances, playing a big role in helping the Guardians overcome a historic deficit to win the AL Central.
However, he entered spring training in a competition to remain in the five-man rotation for 2026, which looks almost preposterous in hindsight. Messick has given up more than three runs in just one of his 11 starts this season, and Cleveland has won nine of those games, including the past four in a row. Sunday was the third time this season he has held an opponent scoreless, and he has given up just one run in three others.
He is set to continue his excellent and potentially award-winning season on Saturday against the Boston Red Sox.
