One loss does not define this team. Sunday proved it.
The Cleveland Guardians bounced back from Saturday’s shutout defeat to take the series finale from the Philadelphia Phillies 3-1 at Citizens Bank Park, improving to 32-23 on the season and claiming the series victory in Philadelphia. After getting blanked on Saturday, Cleveland came out Sunday with purpose and found a way to get the job done the right way.
“The Cleveland Special,” the Guardians posted on X.

That is exactly what it was. A pitching-first, grind-it-out, manufacture-what-you-need brand of baseball that this organization has built its identity around for years. Parker Messick took the ball and delivered 5.2 innings of five hit, no run ball while striking out six and walking two, giving the Guardians the kind of quality start that makes everything else possible. When Messick exited, Colin Holderman, Tim Herrin, and Hunter Gaddis combined to keep Philadelphia off the board before Cade Smith closed it out with a perfect ninth inning and another save to his major league leading total.
Travis Bazzana was the offensive star of the afternoon. The second baseman went 3-4 with a run scored, an RBI, and a home run, providing the biggest blow of the game. Bazzana has quietly been one of the most consistent performers on this roster, and Sunday was a showcase of what he brings when the game is on the line.
My goodness 😳

Steven Kwan was equally important, going 3-4 with an RBI of his own and doing exactly what he does best, putting the barrel on the ball and making the opposing pitcher work for every out.
The Phillies lone run came off Tim Herrin in the seventh inning, a blemish on an otherwise dominant relief effort that could have threatened to make things interesting but never truly put the outcome in doubt.
Coming into Philadelphia on the back of a seven-game winning streak, dropping Saturday’s game, and then responding with a series-clinching win on Sunday is exactly the kind of resilience that separates good teams from great ones.
The Guardians open a three-game series with the Washington Nationals on Monday.
