The weekend yielded three wins in four games for the Cleveland Guardians against the Detroit Tigers. The trio of victories allowed them to take their record to 73-71 and maintain a one-game lead over the Toronto Blue Jays for the third and last Wild Card spot in the American League.
They weren’t easy wins by any means, though. In fact, all of them had some things in common: the most evident one is that all of them were walk-offs. However, it’s also important to point out that Cleveland was never ahead on the score until the moment they took the lead to win each clash in the ninth or tenth inning.
You could say that each game added some grey hairs to manager Stephen Vogt’s head, and he will agree with that statement.
“There’s a reason I look like I’m 55 at 41. It’s so much fun. What a great weekend. Obviously we wish we could win games differently and be a little more relaxed. But that’s not who we are. We love these games, and it happens every time with [the Tigers]. We always play back-and-forth games,” Vogt said.

The Guardians have an amazing pitching staff, including a reliable rotation and an up-and-coming bullpen that, when on, is one of the best in the league. Unfortunately, their offense isn’t consistent and productive enough to score seven or eight runs every other game, but it’s an improving unit with loads of potential.
Because of their inconsistent offense, the team often has to suffer to get some wins. However, the players are also resilient and ‘gritty’, and those traits allow the squad to compete until the 27th out. The Guardians don’t quit easily, and Vogt has been a key figure behind that approach and mindset.
It’s not a coincidence that he has won two AL Manager of the Year Awards in his first two years as the Guardians’ skipper. He has what it takes to be the dugout and clubhouse leader in Cleveland, and has proved it time and again.
As long as Cleveland has Vogt in charge, a quality pitching staff, and talented young hitters, they stand a chance to beat anyone.
