Brayan Rocchio had a breakout season for the Cleveland Guardians this year. After being the Opening Day second baseman, he took over at shortstop following an injury to Gabriel Arias and went on to have an excellent campaign.
The 25-year-old was arguably the best No. 9 hitter in the majors, posting 15 home runs, 73 RBIs, and 66 runs scored. He also provided several clutch hits, including some memorable walk-off game-winners.
Heading into an uncertain offseason, Rocchio sent a heartfelt message to Cleveland on social media, looking ahead with positive thoughts.
“What a ride, on to the next one. Fort the land 4,” Rocchio posted.

After having an excellent postseason in helping the Guardians reach the 2024 ALCS, Rocchio was unable to repeat that performance in this year’s playoffs. Perhaps because of his higher profile, the Chicago White Sox and Tampa Bay Rays were more aware of the damage he can do.
In the ALDS and ALCS, respectively, they combined to hold him to five hits in 35 at-bats, a batting average of .143 and an OPS of .353. Those numbers paled in comparison to the career highs of .253 and .705 he posted during the regular season.
Rocchio is one of 13 Guardians who are arbitration-eligible this offseason, and he will have a strong case for a significant raise. After playing for a salary of less than $800,000, MLB Trade Rumors projects that he could be awarded a $3.1 million deal for 2027 in that process.
That would still seem to be a bargain price for someone who produced at the level Rocchio did last season. But in addition to Cleveland’s frugal history in dealing with such matters, an unsettled labor climate could bring some unexpected changes as well.
This post seems to indicate that Rocchio expects to be back as Cleveland’s starting shortstop next season, but it also could be interpreted as some sort of goodbye message. The Guardians do have options, with a collection of middle infield prospects led by Angel Genao who could step in if needed.
Rocchio has given a lot to the franchise in his four MLB seasons, and hopefully that relationship will continue for years to come.
