The Cleveland Guardians’ farm system has produced an impressive wave of young talent over the past couple of years with Parker Messick, Chase DeLauter, Travis Bazzana, and others all surfacing at the big-league level. The Guardians couldn’t have made it to Game 6 of the ALCS this year without them and there is reason to believe this young group can anchor the Guardians team that finally ends MLB’s longest active World Series drought.
Anytime a team graduates a wave of young talent to the bigs, it’s fair to wonder who is up next. The Guardians still have a few more exciting young prospects at the top of the system, but the depth isn’t quite what it used to be right now.
A nice high-upside shortstop prospect out of the Dominican Republic would certainly help add to that depth, which is exactly what the team is looking to add to the roster. The Guardians are favored to land John Cruz, though he isn’t eligible to sign until mid-January.
“Cleveland #Guardians are favorites to sign (SS) prospect John Cruz out of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Cruz trains with Rivas Y Ventura Academy. He is not eligible to sign until the 1/15/27 International signing day,” said Guardians Prospective.

In the clip shared, Cruz displayed a strong compact swing from the right side that looks mature beyond his years. Not much information is available about him just yet, but he certainly looks the part, or as much as one possibly can from a one-minute video.
Bazzana will hopefully have second base locked down for the next decade and beyond, but shortstop is still up in the air. Brayan Rocchio had his best year in 2026, but it’s highly unlikely he ever blossoms into much more than the solid yet serviceable player that he is now.
For a team that doesn’t like to spend money, it’s pivotal to hit a few home runs in the international player pool. If Cruz can be a potential star, go out and get him and bring him into this system.
