The Cleveland Guardians finally faced a challenge they could not overcome, losing the ALCS to the Tampa Bay Rays in six games. The Guardians had their chances, including in the season-ending 7-3 loss on Monday, but they wound up losing three games in a row after taking a 2-1 lead in the best-of-7 series.
The Guardians also lost the 2024 ALCS to the New York Yankees, dropping that series in five games. So, they know what the heartbreak feels like, but they also know how to overcome it to get back there.
Cleveland shortstop Brayan Rocchio sent a message after the Guardians’ Game 6 loss, saying that he is confident he and his teammates will put in the work so they can someday win an elusive World Series championship.
“We want to continue to work hard this offseason, and we’re gonna be back again. The work we put from spring training to right now, that’s very impressive. So we want to continue to do that, and we want to win the World Series,” Rocchio said.
"We're gonna be back again."

Rocchio, in particular, might be taking Cleveland’s elimination harder than others. After an excellent regular season when he set a career-high in every major offensive category, including some memorable walk-off hits, he did not produce in the playoffs. After going 2-for-14 in the five-game ALDS win against the Chicago White Sox, Rocchio was 3-for-21 against the Rays, giving him an overall postseason slash line of .143/.211/.143 with two RBIs.
He had a chance to erase all of that in the eighth inning on Monday. With Cleveland rallying to get within 5-3, Rocchio batted with the bases loaded and two outs. But with reliever Kevin Kelly brought in to face him, Rocchio struck out on three pitches to end the threat and, essentially, the Guardians’ season.
Looking ahead, Cleveland could be an even stronger contender next year. Young players such as starting pitchers Gavin Williams and Parker Messick, outfielders Chase DeLauter and Angel Martinez, and second baseman Travis Bazzana will continue to develop, and veteran Jose Ramirez should be poised for a bounce-back season.
There are serious questions, however, regarding the futures of manager Stephen Vogt and outfielder Steven Kwan, so the Guardians could also look somewhat different next season, whenever it starts, based on the results of the MLB labor negotiations.
