One night after a clean and efficient victory, the Cleveland Guardians ran into a buzzsaw on Saturday afternoon at Progressive Field and never found a way out of it.
Boston handed Cleveland a lopsided 9-1 defeat in game two of the series, handing the Guardians their most one-sided losses in recent memory and snapping any momentum that had been building after the Friday night win. The Guardians moved to 34-26 on the season despite the setback, still holding their lead atop the American League Central.
The organization kept it brief on social media after the final out.

Parker Messick took the mound for Cleveland and gave the team a chance to win, which in the context of an otherwise ugly afternoon deserves to be acknowledged. The left hander went 5 innings, allowing 5 hits and just 1 earned run while walking 2 and striking out 4. Through his first season in the big leagues, Messick has consistently kept Cleveland in ballgames, and Saturday was no different from his end. The problem was everything that happened after he left.
Boston finished with 11 hits on the day. Cleveland managed just 6 and committed 4 errors, which tells the full story of how the afternoon unraveled. You can survive a hot offensive performance from the opponent. Four errors in a nine run loss is a different kind of problem, and it compounded every difficult moment the bullpen had after Messick departed.
On the offensive side, Travis Bazzana was the lone bright spot in the lineup, going 2-4 with a run scored. Jose Ramirez went 1-3 with a walk and an RBI, accounting for the only run Cleveland crossed home plate.
The four errors are the number that will stick with Stephen Vogt and the coaching staff heading into Sunday. Cleveland built its reputation this season on defense and execution, which makes an afternoon like Saturday stand out even more against the backdrop of what this team has shown it is capable of doing.
The series finale on Sunday gives Cleveland the opportunity to take the series against Boston and move forward. Parker Messick did his job. The rest of the group needs to respond.
