The offensive questions surrounding Kyle Manzardo have been well documented throughout his young major league career. The power is real and the potential has never been in doubt. But the defensive side of his game at first base was a genuine concern coming into 2026, and what is happening with his glove this season deserves just as much attention as anything he is doing with his bat.
Tim Stebbins of MLB.com dug into the numbers behind Manzardo’s defensive development, and the turnaround from 2025 to 2026 is significant.
“He did not grade too highly in metrics such as Outs Above Average (-3), Runs Prevented (-2) and Fielding Run Value (-2), the latter of which is Statcast’s catch-all metric to grade a fielder’s performance. Manzardo has enjoyed a noticeable turnaround so far in 2026. He entered Saturday with +1 Outs Above Average, +1 Runs Prevented and +1 in Fielding Run Value. Beyond the metrics, the eye test tells you he’s moving more athletically at first. He’s also routinely digging low throws out of the dirt, and while that isn’t reflected in a first baseman’s metrics, it speaks to the overall point,” Stebbins wrote.
Going from negative numbers in Outs Above Average, Runs Prevented, and Fielding Run Value in 2025 to positive marks in all three categories in 2026 reflects genuine work put in over the offseason and through the early part of this season.
On the offensive side, Manzardo has been producing in spurts that remind you why the Guardians have been patient with his development. His pinch-hit home run in the eighth inning of Saturday’s 14-6 win against Oakland pushed the lead to 12-5 and was part of a three-run inning that put the game completely out of reach. He entered Saturday hitting .193, but his power numbers and his at-bat quality in high-leverage situations have shown a player who belongs at the major league level.
The defensive turnaround may be the most underappreciated part of Manzardo’s 2026 story so far.
The bat will come around. The glove already has.
