There was a lot of excitement in Cleveland on Saturday after the Guardians made a surprising trade for San Francisco Giants catcher Patrick Bailey. On the other hand, the acquisition of Bailey meant that Bo Naylor was sent down to Triple-A Columbus to make room for him on the roster.
Naylor’s struggles this season were well documented and represented a major step back in his development as a hitter. The 26-year-old will now have a chance to rediscover his stroke in the minors, which is not something manager Stephen Vogt is excited about.
Mason Horodyski of WEWS shared a clip of Vogt’s presser, and the skipper sounded torn on the trade because of his affinity for Naylor. It’s certainly not an indictment on Bailey, but Vogt was honest about how difficult it was for him to have to tell Naylor he was being sent down.
“Probably my least favorite conversation I’ve had since getting this job. Obviously the start to the year has been tough for Bo, but we continue to believe he has the ability to be a very good major league catcher,” said Vogt.

Naylor and the fans had high hopes coming off an impressive performance in the World Baseball Classic, and Vogt had confidence in him taking a step forward as evidenced by batting him fifth early in the season. It just didn’t happen, and for a team in the mix to win another division title, there wasn’t any time to waste.
Bailey is the same age as Naylor and further clouds his future within this organization. He is also a switch-hitter, so there isn’t a path for Naylor to platoon with Bailey either.
It’s tough to see a path to this ending well between Naylor and the Guardians, but he is still only 26 and has a lot of baseball ahead of him. One brutal month hasn’t changed Vogt’s opinion on him, and hopefully he can figure things out and make his way back to the big leagues soon.
