The Cleveland Guardians already have one of the best defensive catchers in the game in Austin Hedges. This season, they also have one of the worst offensive catchers in Bo Naylor.
That duo was supposed to complement each other better than it had in the past, with Naylor expected to build on his offensive breakthrough from late last season. Instead, after waiting more than a month for him to turn it around, the Guardians have decided to try another approach.
On Saturday, Cleveland acquired another light-hitting standout defensive catcher, Patrick Bailey, in a trade with the San Francisco Giants. To make room on the roster, Naylor was demoted to Triple-A.
The Guardians are parting with the No. 29 overall pick in the 2026 MLB Draft, along with dynamic pitching prospect Matt “Tugboat” Wilkinson, in the trade. This type of deal, and the ramifications it creates, is a bold step at this point of the season.
Analyst Jack O’Rourke was quick to question the Guardians’ big trade move, saying it makes “absolutely no sense.”
“This is a really weird trade to happen right now. This move make absolutely no sense. But the Guardians had to address catcher somehow, I guess,” O’Rourke said.

Losing Wilkinson may be a blow to the fan base, as at 6-foot-1 and at least 250 pounds, and with a signature pitch known as the “Invisi-ball,” he was an entertaining prospect to watch on the mound. In his first season at Double-A, the left-hander has a 1.59 ERA in 28.1 innings.
The Guardians may be making this move more so with the future in mind, and that would be bad news for Naylor, who is batting .143 with a .438 OPS this season. Hedges, at 33 years old and in his 12th major league season, is nearing the end of his career, and with prospect Cooper Ingle having an outstanding campaign at Triple-A, Cleveland is likely projecting him and Bailey as its future catching tandem.
Ingle would provide the offense, and Bailey, who has the best Defensive Runs Above Average (DEF) in the league since 2020, would handle the defense, leaving Naylor as potentially the odd man out.
