Standings Show Where Guardians Sit Amid Playoff Race

The Cleveland Guardians earned not one, but two straight come-from-behind wins on Friday over the Detroit Tigers. Both were also walk-off wins: Brayan Rocchio was the hero in the afternoon affair, and Travis Bazzana lifted them to victory on the nightcap.

Friday was a day to remember, but the Guardians have a lot of work ahead. They are trying to hold off a variety of teams vying for the third and last Wild Card spot in the American League, but additionally, they are making a late push for the AL Central.

That’s right: the sweep on Friday’s doubleheader puts Cleveland in a strong position to compete for their third straight division title if they can keep their foot on the gas. It won’t be easy, but it’s very much plausible.

Before Saturday’s games, the Guardians hold a one-game lead over the Toronto Blue Jays for that third Wild Card spot and a two-game lead over the Texas Rangers. They must keep winning to keep them at bay and to aid their main quest: the AL Central crown.

The White Sox are a solid ballclub that refuses to go down after a few horrible seasons. They are equipped to fight. The Guardians, however, have the pieces to challenge for the division and, why not, take it away from them.

Cleveland added multiple useful pieces at the deadline, most notably outfielder Jo Adell, first baseman Nathaniel Lowe, and starter Foster Griffin. In addition, Jose Ramirez has been playing better, Steven Kwan is back to his best, and Rocchio and Bazzana showed some signs of life on Friday. Gavin Williams and Parker Messick are also dealing at the top of the rotation.

Cleveland has what it takes to make a late push for the division and will host Chicago in a crucial three-game series from September 14-16. Mark those dates in your calendar, because things are about to get interesting.
