Guardians Earn Yet Another Dramatic Comeback Win In Nightcap

The Cleveland Guardians started Friday with some exciting late-inning heroics that resulted in a walk-off win against the Detroit Tigers. The nightcap was almost as good, or even better.

Thanks to Travis Bazzana’s clutch hitting, the Guardians earned their second walk-off win of the day, beating the Tigers 4-3 and taking their season record to 72-70. They were down 3-0 at one point, but this team doesn’t give up easily.

Angel Martinez was removed for precautionary reasons after bruising his left shoulder following a collision with Brayan Rocchio. Additionally, rookie slugger Chase DeLauter departed in the sixth inning with a wrist issue. It’s a problem for another day: for now, the Guardians are over the moon.

Left-hander Foster Griffin was solid on Friday night, but not enough to get the win. He contributed a quality start, logging six innings and allowing three runs on eight hits and two walks, striking out three.

After two scoreless frames, the Tigers broke the scoreless tie in the third. Hao-Yu Lee hit an RBI single that plated Zach McKinstry, and a few plays after that, AL Rookie of the Year candidate Kevin McGonigle doubled in Gleyber Torres with the visitors’ second run.

Torres also scored Detroit’s third run when Eduardo Valencia hit an RBI single in the fifth. Nathaniel Lowe was responsible for Cleveland’s first run, with a run-scoring double that brought Jose Ramirez home in the sixth.

The Guardians have a flair for the dramatic these days. In the bottom of the eighth, after Steven Kwan worked a leadoff walk, Travis Bazzana, who had pinch-hit for DeLauter, belted a game-tying two-run homer.

Rookie fireballer Daniel Espino, called up before the game, made a successful return to the big leagues with two scoreless frames in relief of Griffin. Hunter Gaddis followed him with two shutout innings of his own, setting the scene for Bazzana again in the bottom of the tenth.

With a runner on third and two outs, the rookie came through with a walk-off single that brought Brayan Rocchio, who had stolen second and third base to put himself in a position to score, home.

Bazzana was the star of the night, going 2-for-3 with a homer, a run and three RBI as a pinch-hitter.

The series will continue on Saturday at Progressive Field, starting at 6:10 pm ET. It will be a showdown of lefties, as Parker Messick will toe the rubber for the home club and Framber Valdez will do it for the visitors.
