The MLB trade deadline is approaching, and the Cleveland Guardians have yet to turn their season around.
As such, it only makes sense that other teams are keeping tabs on some of Cleveland’s players, knowing that it will most likely be sellers before the end of the month.
With that in mind, the New York Yankees have set their sights on injured outfielder Lane Thomas, according Paul Hoynes of Cleveland.com.
“Former Cleveland pitcher Scott Atchison, now scouting for the Yankees, was at Daikin Park on Monday. He’s scheduled to follow the Guardians to Chicago when they open a four-game series against the White Sox on Thursday. The Yankees were said to be interested in Thomas, but he’s on the injured list for the third time this season. They could also be looking at Cleveland’s relievers,” Hoynes wrote.
The Guardians placed Thomas on the 10-day injured list due to plantar fasciitis in his right foot.
They recalled infielder Will Wilson from Triple-A Columbus in a corresponding move.
To say that this has been a frustrating season for Thomas would be a massive understatement.
He missed 11 games earlier in the season because of the same injury, and the Guardians hope that the extended rest due to the All-Star break will be enough to get him back on the field and fully healthy for the rest of the campaign.
Thomas hasn’t been much of a factor since arriving in Cleveland, hitting just .189 in 92 games over two seasons.
This season, he’s batting .160 with multiple stints on the injured list.
If the Yankees or anybody else makes an appealing offer, it’s hard to make a case for the Guardians not to take it.
