An MLB rookie will invariably have a series of first-time moments he will never forget. Hopefully, they won’t take too long to accomplish.
Cleveland Guardians outfielder Khalil Watson has been able to check off some significant achievements in a very short time. After making his debut on June 18, Watson’s first hit may have taken longer than he would have liked, but his first home run came very soon after that.
Then, on Friday, Watson got to experience the thrill of his first walk-off RBI. His 10th-inning single gave the Guardians a 3-2 comeback win against the Chicago White Sox.
Afterward, Watson had an honest admission about his first career walk-off, calling it a “special moment.”
“It’s just a special moment, the first walk-off of my career. It’s unbelievable. But I really want to like relive that again, which I will, but it was special tonight,” Watson said.

Some players wait years before getting their first walk-off hit, while others never get one over the course of their careers. Watson got his in just his 15th MLB game and 48th at-bat.
With no outs and runners on first and third, Watson hit a ground ball through Chicago’s drawn-in infield. Steven Kwan crossed the plate with the historic winning run, starting a celebration Watson won’t soon forget.
Despite having a solid season in the minor leagues, it did not look like Watson would be in the majors this year. But when outfielders Chase DeLauter and Angel Martinez were injured in the same game on June 13, along with third baseman Jose Ramirez, the Guardians’ lineup needed reinforcements.
Watson did not have a hit in his first four games, covering 12 at-bats, before he broke through with a pinch-hit single against the White Sox on June 22. He hit his first MLB home run in the next game, and since then, he has been on an impressive hot streak.
The 23-year-old has at least one hit in nine of his past 11 games. He has a slash line of .271/.300/.396 and may have secured a role for himself even when the Guardians are completely healthy.
It’s an impressive performance by a young player, and it will be exciting to see what Watson can do next.
