Khalil Watson has been carrying the Cleveland Guardians’ offense for a few weeks now. The young, dynamic outfielder who made his MLB debut last month isn’t a stranger to the big stage.
He was, after all, a first-round pick in 2021. He is familiar with the pressure and high expectations attached to high-profile athletes.
The Guardians acquired him in the Josh Bell trade in 2023, and he has continued his development with multiple productive seasons in the high minors. His excellent play at Triple-A, where he had a 125 wRC+, 12 home runs and 15 stolen bases this year, earned him a promotion to the majors.
The early stages of his MLB tenure were awful for him, as he didn’t get a hit in his first four games. After that, he took off and became one of Cleveland’s most important players.
Watson is on a roll, cementing his place in the lineup and solidifying his spot in its long-term plans.
“Cleveland Guardians 23-year-old OF Kahlil Watson over his last 11 games, including tonight’s walk-off winner! 13-36, 3 R, 3 2B, 1 HR, 9 RBI, 2 BB, 2 SB, AVG .361, OBP .395,” Guardians Prospective posted.

On Friday, Watson gave the Guardians a hard-fought win with a walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th. The victory allowed Cleveland to retake sole possession of first place in the AL Central.
Watson, who is sporting a 94 wRC+ in his short MLB tenure, is getting valuable at-bats and playing time because of Angel Martinez’s injury. You can say, however, that Watson will make things very difficult for manager Stephen Vogt once everyone is healthy. He has played very well and doesn’t deserve to go to the bench.
Watson is not a finished product. In order to reach his full potential, he needs MLB playing time. Right now, some plate-discipline issues seem to be the only thing preventing him from becoming a star. To overcome those weaknesses, he needs to fail, then learn and adjust.
Will he play well enough to keep earning regular playing time? Will the Guardians have space for him when everyone is healthy?
The answer to those questions will shape Watson’s future with the organization.
