The Cleveland Guardians received a scare during Sunday’s spring training game after star third baseman José Ramírez exited early with a shoulder issue.
Ramírez left the Guardians’ Cactus League matchup against the Athletics after jamming his left shoulder while sliding into third base earlier in the game. The injury appeared to occur in the second inning after Ramírez doubled and then attempted to steal third.
Manager Stephen Vogt provided an update shortly after the game and indicated the team does not believe the injury is serious.
“Ramírez jammed his left shoulder sliding into third base and has some inflammation,” Vogt said.

Vogt also added that the situation is currently considered day-to-day, which is encouraging news for Cleveland as the team continues preparing for the start of the 2026 season.
Ramírez remained in the game briefly after the slide but was eventually removed in the fourth inning.
Before exiting, Ramírez was productive at the plate. The veteran went 1-for-2 with a double and two RBIs, continuing what has been a solid spring showing.
Despite the injury scare, the Guardians’ offense performed well overall in the game, defeating the Athletics 12-6. Several players contributed at the plate, including Chase DeLauter, David Fry, CJ Kayfus, and Stuart Fairchild, all of whom recorded RBIs during the win.
Still, the focus after the game quickly shifted to the health of Cleveland’s franchise cornerstone.
The seven-time All-Star has been one of the most consistent players in baseball over the past decade, providing Cleveland with elite production both offensively and defensively.
With Opening Day approaching, Cleveland’s priority will be making sure Ramírez is fully healthy before the games begin to count.
For now, the day-to-day designation suggests the injury may only be a minor issue. However, Guardians fans will still be watching closely for updates in the coming days.
If Ramírez is able to return quickly, Cleveland will feel fortunate to have avoided a potentially serious setback as they continue preparing for the 2026 season.
