The timing of the release could not be more fitting. Ramírez is in the middle of one of the more quietly historic stretches of his already remarkable career with Cleveland. On Saturday night against the Cincinnati Reds, his leadoff single in the fifth inning became the 1,706th hit of his career, tying Lou Boudreau for sixth place in franchise history. He then took sole possession of sixth place with a base hit in the eighth inning, pushing his career total to 1,707. His next target is Charlie Jamieson in fifth place at 1,753 hits, a mark that is well within reach given the pace Ramirez has maintained.
He also reached 20 stolen bases on the season during Saturday’s game, becoming just the fifth player in franchise history to accomplish that feat through the first 47 games of a season. He is the first Guardian to do it since Kenny Lofton swiped 30 through 47 games back in 1996. That is the kind of company that puts everything into perspective.
Guardians fans who want to add a piece of Ramirez history to their collection would be wise not to sleep on it.
