The Cleveland Guardians didn’t make any big moves last offseason, at least in terms of acquiring talent.
That was the case again at this year’s trade deadline.
Nevertheless, team insider Terry Pluto still has faith that things will be different in the offseason.
In his latest column, he urged the team to go after an outfielder:
“This story is a plea for the Guardians to trade for an established outfielder who can hit 15-to-20 homers with a .725 OPS. He doesn’t have to be a star. It would help if he’s a right-handed hitter,” Pluto wrote.
For most of its history, the Guardians have been rather quiet and money-savvy in the offseason, and, unfortunately, this time might not be the exception to that rule.
This time, however, reinforcements might come from within, and it might be a good thing.
Stephen Vogt showed a lot of confidence in the young players down the stretch, with Chase DeLauter even making his debut in the playoffs.
With the way DeLauter, George Valera, and C.J. Kayfus performed this season, they should all be a lock to make the roster from the very start of the campaign.
If the Guardians don’t trade Steven Kwan, they should be more than set in the outfield with their plethora of young talents.
Of course, banking all hopes on young players might not be the wisest or safest choice, and they should still look to bring in some veteran help in the offseason.
Then again, they need to give their promising youngsters as much playing time as possible to continue their impressive development.
And given the way this team has usually operated, the fans should know better than to get their hopes up and expect any blockbuster deals or big-name signings.
