The Cleveland Guardians lost one of their most important players late in the season.
With his team trailing 2-1, David Fry tried to bunt, but Tarik Skubal got him in the face with a 99 mph ball.
Needless to say, it wasn’t a pretty sight.
Fortunately, days after being taken to the hospital, the designated hitter is out of harm’s way.
When asked about it, the veteran claimed to be doing fine:
“I feel great, all things considered,” Fry said. “It’s 100% a God thing. It could have been way, way worse. They just kept saying, ‘An inch up, an inch down, we could have had some real problems.’ But all in all, I feel great.”
The Guardians could’ve certainly used a proven veteran and a player of Fry’s caliber in the three-game wild-card series.
That very same Detroit Tigers team wound up cutting the season short.
Fry didn’t have the season the fans hoped for, as he was usually known for his slugging prowess and efficient hitting.
However, context matters, and he was coming off a Tommy John surgery, so he should get a pass.
He will now focus on getting back to full strength and getting his legs back under him, as he should return to playing the field next season after only being a designated hitter this time around.
The Guardians will most likely lean heavily on the young sluggers next season, with George Valera, C.J. Kayfus, Chase DeLauter, and maybe even Travis Bazzana taking the field right out of the gate.
Even so, all teams need proven veterans, and given how valuable he’s been to this organization, he should be a no-brainer to keep around.
