The Cleveland Guardians designated starting pitcher Carlos Carrasco for assignment on Tuesday.
They needed a roster spot and couldn’t guarantee the veteran hurler a role.
On Friday, the team announced that he will remain with the organization.
The right-hander chose to stay and accept an outright assignment to Triple-A Columbus to serve as organizational depth going forward.
“RHP Carlos Carrasco cleared waivers and accepted an outright assignment to @CLBClippers . He is slated to start Saturday night for the Clips,” Guards Insider, the team’s official minor league and player development account, posted on X.

Carrasco knows that pitching depth in the major leagues can evaporate rather quickly.
He might find himself making important starts for a playoff-caliber organization in the upcoming days or weeks.
The righty recently recovered from a right hip strain suffered in early August.
The 2024 campaign hasn’t been kind to Carrasco performance-wise, as he went 3-10 with a 5.64 ERA, a 1.39 WHIP and 89 strikeouts in 103.2 innings this year.
He has been useful for stretches, though, and it’s all about being 100 percent healthy to become an option for the organization and manager Stephen Vogt.
It will be tough for him to crack the pitching staff, though, unless there is an injury or two.
The Guards have one of the best and deepest bullpens in baseball, and their rotation is currently full with one pitcher close to returning from the injured list (Alex Cobb).
In any case, he will remain ready and try to get in the best possible shape to potentially contribute as the Guards try to secure the division title and a first-round bye.
