The Cleveland Guardians hope to have their No. 1 pick take the field at some point this season.
Travis Bazzana’s call-up will be delayed because of an injury, but given the way he was playing in the minors, it seemed like he was heading towards a promotion.
Of course, that could spell trouble for Daniel Schneemann, who’s been holding down the fort at second base this season.
Then again, Tim Kelly of Bleacher Report thinks that won’t be the case at all.
In his latest column, he called Schneemann the ‘best-kept secret’ on the Guardians’ roster, praising his positional versatility and citing that Stephen Vogt will find a way to keep him on the field:
“In 46 games, [Daniel] Schneemann has seven home runs, a .779 OPS and two outs above average at second base. The even better news for the Guardians is that he has experience playing every position on the diamond except first base and catcher, so it’s not as though he won’t have a fit in Cleveland whenever Bazzana takes over at second base,” Kelly wrote.
Schneemann took over as a stopgap when the Guardians traded Andres Gimenez to the Toronto Blue Jays, and while he was projected to be just a temporary solution, he’s exceeded all expectations so far.
He keeps cementing himself as a steady offensive contributor in Ohio, and he proved that by leading his team to an epic 5-3 comeback win over the Blue Jays last month.
It was his first multi-home run game of his career, as he also had a solo homer in the eighth before recording the first grand slam of his young and promising career in the majors.
