Cleveland Guardians second baseman Travis Bazzana, the No. 1 overall pick of the 2024 MLB Draft, was called up to the majors in late April. He was a beast in May, with eight doubles, three homers, and a 150 wRC+.
That May performance earned him a spot on the American League’s All-Star Game roster. However, in every other month of his rookie campaign, Bazzana has been a below-average hitter.
The second half has been particularly unproductive. He has an 85 wRC+ after the break, and a 97 mark overall this season.
Is Bazzana a bust? Did he deserve to be an All-Star? It’s way too premature to answer the first question, and the second depends on perspective. However, the here and now is what matters most, and the second baseman has been frustrating to watch for weeks.
Guardians general manager Mike Chernoff, however, refused to hit the panic button on Bazzana and chalked up his struggles as typical inconsistent play by a rookie.
“This is what we do every year. This is how we do it — we win with young players. That means they go through ups and downs. By the way, veteran players go through ups and downs too. They’re just used to getting through it. This is the sort of constant balance of performance and development. We know how we have to win. We are confident in the group that we have. We know that this is a group that can take us into the postseason. And [Stephen Vogt] often makes tough decisions about who plays every day that gives us the best shot at winning, but we know that the best team that we can field down there has the best version of Travis Bazzana out there, for sure,” Chernoff said.

Cleveland not only believes they can win with Bazzana, but also, they think he has the potential to turn things around and become an on-base dynamo with some power and speed. Otherwise, they would have replaced him in the lineup already.
The Guardians will go as far as their young players take them, and Bazzana is certainly part of that mix. He was a No. 1 overall pick for a reason, and he played like one for weeks before struggling in the summer.
He might struggle on defense and with contact, but he has the raw tools to turn around his fate and give some life to the bottom of the Guardians’ lineup. Some say that he should start losing playing time, but truth be told, the team is probably better off trying to get their talented second baseman going rather than replacing him.
