The Cleveland Guardians have a solid, underrated rotation that doesn’t usually get a lot of respect around the league. It lacks a true proven workhorse, yes, but every pitcher can get the ball and give the team six solid innings on any given day.
Perhaps the weakest link was Logan Allen, who was vying for a rotation spot with fellow lefty Parker Messick. Allen, who pitched for Team Panama in the World Baseball Classic, put together a very solid season in 2025 with a 4.25 ERA in 156.2 innings.
Still, his ceiling is limited, and he had a disastrous outing on Friday that sealed his fate. The southpaw allowed a whopping 12 runs in 2.1 innings of work, on 14 hits. He walked two, struck out two, and conceded a pair of home runs.
The poor start left his Cactus League ERA at an unfathomable 18.00. With Messick contributing a 3.60 ERA, the organization’s decision was fairly obvious.
“The Guardians have optioned Logan Allen to Triple-A Columbus. Their rotation to begin the season will feature (in some order): Opening Day starter Tanner Bibee, Gavin Williams, Slade Cecconi, Joey Cantillo, and Parker Messick,” team insider Tim Stebbins posted on X.

Messick, who finished the 2025 campaign with a 2.72 ERA in 39.2 major league innings, wins a spot and gives Cleveland much more upside than Allen.
Allen has a minor league option remaining, and the Guardians aren’t afraid to use it if it means putting the best possible team on the field. They clearly did with their decision to go with Messick on the Opening Day roster and pitching staff.
Allen remains a valuable depth pitcher who will be ready for another chance when injuries strike, provided he is pitching well in Columbus. He can be a solid backend hurler in a contender, but fell victim to the numbers game this time around. Messick was, simply put, in better form.
Bibee will take the ball on Opening Day, and Williams, Cecconi, Cantillo, and Messick will round out a staff brimming with upside.
Daniel Espino, Doug Nikhazy, and Kolby Allard are also emergency rotation options for the reigning AL Central champs.
