The Cleveland Guardians have yet to make a significant move regarding their lineup this offseason. Though they have bolstered their bullpen with several recent acquisitions, they are still looking for some hitters.
Cleveland has several young position players set to move into bigger roles next season, including heralded outfield prospect Chase DeLauter. That could be why they are losing a familiar face.
According to insider Ken Rosenthal, the Guardians were seeking a reunion with Lane Thomas, who instead left as a free agent to sign with the Kansas City Royals.
“They sought a reunion with Lane Thomas before he signed a one-year, $5.25 million free-agent contract with the Royals. But mindful of their young talent, they only were willing to offer him at-bats on the short side of a platoon,” Rosenthal wrote.
Thomas played the past two seasons for the Guardians, appearing in 92 games overall. In 2025, he was limited to 39 games due to multiple injuries that included season-ending surgery on his foot. He batted just .160 with four home runs.
A seven-year MLB veteran, Thomas debuted with the St. Louis Cardinals and also played for the Washington Nationals. In 600 games, he has a .242 batting average, 76 home runs, and 71 stolen bases.
The Guardians did re-sign outfielder Nolan Jones, creating a possible logjam at the position. With DeLauter and fellow prospect George Valera emerging, along with Angel Martinez returning, and C.J. Kayfus also an option, there likely was little playing time for Thomas.
In addition, Cleveland also recently signed former Atlanta Braves outfielder Stuart Fairchild to a minor league contract. He is an option as a versatile fourth outfielder who can play all three positions.
Now, Thomas will compete against them as a member of an AL Central rival.
