With spring training about to begin, the Cleveland Guardians are looking to put the finishing touches on their roster for the 2026 season. Though many observers believe they still need an upgrade on offense to defend their back-to-back AL Central titles, they could make a move to shore up their defense instead.
Many veteran free agents remain without jobs as camps get ready to open. Those players could finally capitalize on an opportunity as teams around MLB decide on what they need.
Among them, the Guardians are reportedly showing interest in 2025 Gold Glove winner Ty France, an infielder who is on the radar of multiple teams.
“San Diego added [Miguel] Andujar but has been in the mix for France, too. Two others in on France: Cleveland and Colorado,” Chris Cotillo posted on X.

According to Cotillo, in addition to the Guardians, San Diego Padres and Colorado Rockies, France is being considered by the Arizona Diamondbacks, New York Mets and New York Yankees. Last season, he was awarded the American League Gold Glove at first base, playing for the Minnesota Twins and Toronto Blue Jays.
Interestingly, the Diamondbacks are also reportedly interested in first baseman Carlos Santana, who won the Gold Glove in 2024 playing for the Twins before returning to the Guardians to open last season. He was eventually released and then signed with the Chicago Cubs as Cleveland looked to create more playing time for Kyle Manzardo.
France may not bring much to the table offensively, but he did hit 20 home runs for the Seattle Mariners in 2022. Last season, with the Twins and Blue Jays combined, he batted .257 with a .681 OPS and seven home runs in 490 plate appearances.
The 31-year-old could provide some veteran stability and leadership for the Guardians, who may have as many as four rookies in their Opening Day lineup. Outfielder Chase DeLauter and second baseman Travis Bazzana would be making their MLB regular-season debuts alongside late-season callups C.J. Kayfus and George Valera as Cleveland looks for offensive improvement from within the organization.
Though France may not be an ideal fit, he could prove to be a worthwhile addition for the Guardians.
