Though it eventually ended with a historic MLB debut, Chase DeLatuer’s 2025 season as a member of the Cleveland Guardians organization could be considered disappointing overall. A string of injuries limited his playing time and likely kept him from reaching the majors sooner than he did.
The outfielder was able to play well at Triple-A once finally healthy, and he was promoted to the big leagues for Cleveland’s AL Wild Card playoff series against the Detroit Tigers. He became one of the few players in history to make his MLB debut in a postseason game.
Now, the rookie is projected to be part of Cleveland’s Opening Day lineup. Big things are expected, as he is considered a potential contender to win AL Rookie of the Year.
That is why the Guardians prospect has been named a “bounce-back” candidate for the 2026 season by MLB.com.
“Injuries have limited DeLauter to just 138 regular-season games since the Guardians drafted him 16th overall in 2022 — multiple left foot injuries, a sprained big right toe, a right hamstring strain, a sports hernia and a hamate fracture among them. The good news is that most of his injuries have been freak accidents that shouldn’t be at elevated risk of recurring (although the frequency is head-scratching). The Guardians clearly have big faith in his bat — he’s one of four ranked overall prospects with 60-grade hit and power tools — having started him twice in the playoffs for his first big league action,” Ben Weinrib wrote.
A first-round pick in the 2022 MLB Draft, DeLauter has been largely unavailable over his three seasons, with a high of 57 games played in his first year. Last season, he played in 42 games, with 34 of those for Triple-A Columbus.
He did manage to post a .278/.383/.476 slash line with five home runs in 126 at-bats. With the Guardians desperate to add some offense after rallying to win the AL Central, he was added to the playoff roster and went 1-for-6 in his first major league action.
The Guardians will hope for a higher level of production this season as they look to improve from within. DeLauter could be one of four rookies given bigger roles this season, along with Travis Bazzana, George Valera and C.J. Kayfus.
Though that strategy is being questioned by some, it does have the potential to pay off in a big way. Manager Stephen Vogt said he is confident in the approach and believes the lineup is capable of big things in 2026.
With spring training about to begin, everyone will get a look at how it might work when all the pieces are together for the first time.
