Despite a disappointing 46-49 record heading into the All-Star Break, the Cleveland Guardians remain within striking distance of postseason contention, sitting just 4.5 games behind in the AL Wild Card race.
With the MLB trade deadline approaching, the Guardians have emerged as a focal point for potential blockbuster deals.
The latest speculation centers around a fascinating swap with the Boston Red Sox that could reshape both franchises.
CBS Sports’ Mike Axisa recently highlighted the intriguing possibility.
Prediction: The Guardians and Red Sox will swap Emmanuel Clase for Jarren Duran.
“Boston has more good outfielders than outfield spots and the Guardians can spare an end-of-game reliever. I will not predict a one-for-one trade — I’ll say there will be more pieces involved to even things out — but Clase for Duran will be the meat of it,” Axisa said.
For Cleveland, this move addresses a glaring offensive weakness that has plagued the team throughout the season.
The Guardians rank 26th in runs scored, with production falling off dramatically beyond José Ramírez and Steven Kwan.
Duran brings exactly what Cleveland needs. The 2024 All-Star and MVP candidate combines speed, power, and elite defensive skills while remaining under team control through 2028.
This season, Duran is hitting .258/.318/.431 with 8 home runs, 50 RBIs, and 16 stolen bases.
Meanwhile, Clase continues dominating as one of baseball’s premier closers, bouncing back from early struggles with a 1.20 ERA and 15 saves since May 1.
Both players offer long-term value with team-friendly contracts, making this potential trade particularly appealing for Cleveland’s future plans.
