Trevor Bauer’s journey with the Yokohama DeNA BayStars has become one of the most perplexing stories in professional baseball.
The former Cy Young Award winner arrived in Japan with expectations of dominance, but his recent campaign has been marked by inconsistency and concerning performances that have left fans and analysts questioning what went wrong.
Recent data suggests Bauer’s struggles have reached historic proportions, putting him on the verge of an unwanted record.
“The worst ERA- by a qualified foreign pitcher in NPB history is 144 by Swallows starter Bob Gibson (no, not that one) in 1988. Trevor Bauer is currently carrying a 142 ERA-,” Gaijin Baseball shared on X.

The numbers tell a troubling story for someone who once stood atop the National League.
After a disastrous outing against the Yomiuri Giants where he allowed 13 baserunners and five earned runs, Bauer was demoted to the farm system in late June.
His return brought little improvement.
Against the Hiroshima Toyo Carp, Bauer surrendered what became the longest home run in Japanese baseball history at 594 feet.
He managed six innings but allowed four earned runs, pushing his ERA to 4.17, the highest among all NPB starters.
While he leads the Central League in strikeouts, that individual success hasn’t translated into team results.
The contrast with his 2024 Mexican League performance is stark. There, he posted a perfect 10-0 record with a 2.48 ERA and claimed Pitcher of the Year honors.
What seemed like a calculated step back toward Major League Baseball now appears more cautionary than encouraging, showing how quickly fortunes can change in professional sports.
