The Cleveland Guardians know they need to keep a close eye on the best prospects if they want to keep up with big-market teams.
That’s why it’s not unusual to see them linked to a sought-after middle infielder.
“Cleveland Guardians are favorites to sign (SS) prospect John Cruz out of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Cruz trains with Rivas Y Ventura Academy. He is not eligible to sign until the [Jan. 15, 2027] international signing day,” Guardians Prospective wrote on X.

If the name of that academy sounds familiar, it’s because it was where former Guardians international signing Junior Caminero developed.
As such, the relationship with the organization could help their cause in these negotiations.
The Guardians have a long-standing tradition of identifying and developing infielders, including Caminero, who has become a budding superstar since being traded to the Tampa Bay Rays.
The organization usually targets elite defensive prospects with a knack for contact over power.
Considering that, players who fit that mold likely consider Cleveland when deciding where to sign.
Of course, that’s not to say that Cruz or any other prospect is going to be a star, as they might not even make it to the majors.
But this could be the start of a new chapter in franchise history.
