The Cleveland Guardians have some impressive middle infield talent. In addition to breakout star Brayan Rocchio and All-Star Travis Bazzana, they have Angel Genao already in the bigs, plus quality prospects such as Dean Curley, Luke Hill, and many others.
You could also add shortstop Welbyn Francisca to the mix. Ranked as the Guardians’ 19th-best prospect, the 20-year-old already reached Double-A and could be an option to help Cleveland’s major league team in late-2027. It’s unlikely he will be fully ready next year, as 2028 seems like the best bet for his debut.
It’s not a matter of when he’ll get the call, though: it’s a matter of being ready to make an impact when it happens.
Prospect evaluator Keith Law reviewed some Arizona Fall League prospects, and Francisca, who is playing well and leads the circuit in OPS as of Monday afternoon with a 1.206 mark after nine games, got a mixed review.
“[Cleveland Guardians infielder Welbyn Francisca is] not very physical, but he hits the ball pretty hard anyway. He’s a switch hitter who has had huge platoon splits the last two years, hitting better in every way from the left side, although I don’t mind the right-handed swing — he’s just not as strong hitting from that side. He didn’t look great at shortstop and might be better suited to second or third,” Law wrote.
There are positives and negatives in Law’s report. Of course, the platoon splits are concerning, but the evaluator suggests there’s potential in the right-handed swing. With Francisca being so young, he still has a chance to develop.
The fact that he might not be a shortstop in the majors sounds bad, but it isn’t necessarily a problem. If anything, he could be a fine second or third baseman.
Now, the positives. Francisca hits the ball hard, which is a nice indicator of future success, and his platoon splits at least favor the strong side.
He is coming off a very solid campaign in the minors this year, posting a .277/.356/.538 line (123 wRC+) with 17 home runs and 11 stolen bases in High-A and a .300/.333/.450 line (110 wRC+) in five Double-A games.
The fact that he reached Akron at just 20 years old is remarkable. That’s where he will surely start in 2027, and from there, it all depends on him and his progression. It might not happen next year, but he has a chance to be a regular for the Guardians if he keeps improving.
