Parker Messick had one of the best rookie seasons for a Cleveland Guardians pitcher, establishing himself as a legitimate fixture in the rotation. Although it did not end as either he or the Guardians had hoped, it was a campaign worth remembering.
The left-hander is sure to earn votes for AL Rookie of the Year, and probably some for the AL Cy Young Award. It is a lot to accomplish for someone with just 39 major-league starts.
To go along with that, Messick is celebrating a special day on Monday, as it is his 26th birthday.
“Happy birthday, Parker!” the Guardians posted.

Messick and Cleveland likely would have preferred to mark this milestone while participating in the World Series. Unfortunately, the Guardians fell just two wins short with a six-game loss to the Tampa Bay Rays in the ALCS.
In that series, Messick took the loss in two of those games, and he was 0-3 in the playoffs overall. That was after he went 12-9 during the regular season with a 2.56 ERA that ranked sixth in the majors. He had 193 strikeouts with just 149 hits and 49 walks allowed in 186.1 innings, and his 1.06 WHIP ranked eighth.
After making his MLB debut in August 2025, Messick landed at exactly 200.0 innings pitched this season, and the fatigue from that unprecedented workload may have caught up to him. He lasted just 5.0 innings in one of his four playoff starts and did not make it to the third inning in two of them.
Overall, his postseason ERA was 3.95, and he was undone by allowing 10 walks in 13.2 innings. He took the loss in Game 1 of the ALDS against the Chicago White Sox, and in Games 2 and 5 of the ALCS against the Rays.
So, heading into this offseason, Messick can look back positively on what he was able to accomplish, but also know he still has areas to improve and bigger goals to accomplish, which is almost a perfect scenario for a young talent of his ability.
