Utility man Daniel Schneemann has an important role for the Cleveland Guardians. His ability to play multiple positions is a vital component of their roster building, as he can fill the job of several players all by himself.
With top prospect Travis Bazzana perhaps not ready to make his major league debut on Opening Day, Schneemann’s ability to back up Brayan Rocchio at second base and Gabriel Arias at shortstop takes on even more significance. However, with Schneemann getting injured at spring training, those plans may have been in danger.
Fortunately, according to Tim Stebbins of MLB.com, the Guardians got a positive update on Schneemann, whose injury “doesn’t sound too serious.”
“[Manager Stephen] Vogt said Schneemann hurt his ankle during infield drills. He underwent X-rays that came back negative, and they’ll continue to assess him over the coming days. But doesn’t sound too serious at this point,” Stebbins posted on X.

In addition to his fielding versatility, Schneemann got off to a hot start at the plate in the Cactus League. That could have changed the Guardians’ plans for Bazzana somewhat, as he left spring training to play for Australia in the World Baseball Classic.
Coincidentally, Bazzana is back at camp just as Schneemann may be sidelined. In nine spring games, Schneemann was batting .320 and had an OPS of .760. Though it’s a very small sample size of 25 at-bats, it would be a marked improvement over his .210 batting average and .648 OPS over his first two MLB seasons.
In that time, Schneemann has played every position except first base, catcher and pitcher. Last season, he appeared in 74 games at second base, 38 games in the outfield, and 27 games at third base.
With competition for spots on the final 26-man roster ongoing, if he is sidelined for any length of time, it would provide an unexpected opportunity for someone else. That could include Bazzana, though the plan seems to be to have him start the season in Triple-A and be promoted for his first MLB action during the season. Juan Brito could be another middle infield option if needed.
As of now, there seems to be no need for alarm regarding Schneemann, but this development shows that anything can happen to alter the plans for the start of the 2026 season.
