The Cleveland Guardians haven’t made any major headlines in acquiring players this offseason. Although they have made a handful of moves to bolster their bullpen, the lack of a big-name deal has been discouraging to their fan base.
The pace of transactions around MLB is relatively slow overall, with several top players still to be on the move, either as free agents or via trade. Yet, Cleveland’s lack of activity could be a setback as it tries to remain among the top contenders in the American League.
That is why one insider is calling out the Guardians for their questionable offseason philosophy, which includes the recent signing of pitcher Sean Armstrong.
“When is this going to end? When are they going to stop stockpiling right-handed veteran relievers?” Joe Noga asked. “That’s $5.5 million you’re not offering to Stephen Kwan in an extension or you’re not going out and using [to sign a bat]. So that’s where that money’s going right now.”
The Guardians’ bullpen was among the best in the game last season, while the offense was among the worst. Yet, instead of trying to improve the lineup, they are adding to something that was already a strength.
After losing closer Emmanuel Classe to an MLB gambling investigation last season, Cade Smith took over and was excellent down the stretch. He and his fellow relievers helped the Guardians overcome a historic deficit to win the AL Central and make the playoffs for a second straight season.
That success came despite an offense that lacked punch other than Kwan and Jose Ramirez. Yet, the organization so far has failed to pursue an impact bat.
In addition, they reportedly could part with Kwan, an All-Star outfielder who has been seeking a contract extension. Though he is under club control through the 2027 season, the Guardians may look to trade him rather than spend the money to keep him long term.
That would be a significant blow to an offense that, without any additions, will have to rely on improvement from younger players such as Chase DeLauter and C.J. Kayfus.
