The Cleveland Guardians are hovering around .500.
They’re not quite good enough to pursue a championship, nor bad enough to wave the white flag.
That’s why even they don’t seem to be sure about their next steps.
A high-ranking executive recently admitted that they will most likely wait to figure out what to do regarding the trade deadline.
“I think we’re going to have to take it up to the last minute and see where we are. It’s our job to prepare on all sides of this to know every single opportunity that we have to improve our team, or on the flip side, to take advantage of the moment if we are not in contention for a spot. I’m hopeful we can pull ourselves back into closer contention,” Guardians general manager Mike Chernoff told The Athletic.
That’s not necessarily ideal, considering that the Guardians could find themselves in a position of desperation as opposed to making the most of the opportunities that might come their way.
There have been conflicting reports about what the team might do.
As things stand now, the Guardians reportedly are making Jose Ramirez, Steven Kwan and Emmanuel Clase untouchable in any trade talks.
Ramirez also has a no-trade clause, so fans should rest assured that he’s going to be here.
As for Clase and Kwan, however, perhaps another team will make an offer that would make the Guardians reconsider their stance on them.
Cleveland is playing some of its best baseball of the season, and while the record isn’t necessarily encouraging, its schedule for the second half is favorable.
All things considered, it seems like this week will be crucial to the team’s aspirations and plans for the remainder of the season.
