The Cleveland Guardians find themselves at the center with the MLB trade deadline approaching.
Despite sitting just 3.5 games out of the final AL Wild Card spot, the organization has reportedly opened the door to exploring trade possibilities for left fielder Steven Kwan.
The two-time All-Star and three-time Gold Glove winner represents significant value, but any potential deal would come with a steep price tag.
The Guardians’ willingness to listen to offers for Kwan signals their high standards for any potential return.
According to Jim Bowden of The Athletic, Cleveland would only consider parting with their defensive standout under very specific circumstances.
“They also might consider moving left fielder Steven Kwan, but would deal the three-time Gold Glove Award winner only if they’re overwhelmed and can win a deal outright. The Guardians are searching for non-arbitration-eligible, major-league-ready players or hitting prospects on the doorstep of the majors,” Bowden wrote.
Kwan’s production this season backs up Cleveland’s valuation.
The outfielder is slashing .288/.352/.398 with six home runs, 32 RBIs, and 11 stolen bases across 93 games.
His remarkable 8.3% strikeout rate stands out even more than his offensive numbers, showcasing the plate discipline that makes him valuable beyond traditional statistics.
Multiple contenders have expressed interest, including the Los Angeles Dodgers, Philadelphia Phillies, New York Mets, Cincinnati Reds, Toronto Blue Jays, and San Diego Padres.
Some executives view Kwan as untouchable, given Cleveland’s struggles developing consistent outfield talent.
Others see an opportunity to maximize his value while his stock remains high.
With Cleveland riding an incredible surge and Kwan recently returning from a wrist injury, momentum may be shifting away from any potential trade.
