When discussing elite relievers in MLB, everybody talks about Mason Miller and the fact that he has struck out more than half of the hitters he has faced to this point. He is the only qualified pitcher to do that this year, with a 52.2 percent strikeout rate.
You wouldn’t guess who leads the American League in the category and is second in the big leagues. We will tell you: it’s Erik Sabrowski of the Cleveland Guardians.
The left-hander has been absolutely dominant, with a 1.71 ERA in 21 innings. His 47 percent strikeout rate is absolutely amazing.
Unfortunately for Sabrowski and the Guardians, however, he will be on the shelf for a while. He has suffered a potentially serious elbow injury.
“The Guardians are placing Erik Sabrowski on the injured list with left elbow inflammation. Codi Heuer recalled,” Guardians insider Zack Meisel, who covers the team for The Athletic, said.

We say ‘potentially serious’ because elbow inflammation is not usually a good sign. It is, in fact, something that has got to have Cleveland’s medical staff very, very worried.
There isn’t much information at the moment about the state of Sabrowski’s elbow and when he can return to the active roster. All we know to this point is that he has been the team’s best reliever this year, even better than Cade Smith.
In addition to his brilliant ERA and strikeout rate, the southpaw is sporting an excellent 0.95 WHIP, a 1.84 FIP, and has allowed just one home run in 21 innings. His 13 walks hint at a few command issues from time to time, but he has generally gotten out of trouble with his 39 punchouts. Sabrowski is a key cog in the surging Guardians’ bullpen.
Sabrowski is more than just a left-handed reliever populating the Guardians’ bullpen: he is one of their main late-inning weapons. Losing him for a significant period would be a disaster.
It’s important to point out that Sabrowski has not just one, but two Tommy John surgeries in his past. He had one in 2018, shortly after being drafted, and another one in 2021.
Sabrowski is looking at, minimum, a few weeks off the roster. The worst-case scenario would take him out for 2026 and 2027.
There’s no point in speculating, though. Fans, media, and the team itself have no choice but to wait for more information.
