The Cleveland Guardians were close to making history, coming within two outs of a no-hitter.
Despite giving up a hit in the ninth inning, Gavin Williams left the game on a high note.
As pointed out by Underdog MLB on X, he finished with 126 pitches, one hit, one earned run, six strikeouts and four walks in 8.2 innings.
It was the most pitches thrown in a game by any starter since 2023.

He dominated the New York Mets almost at will until Juan Soto hit a solo home run with one out in the bottom of the ninth.
Then, after another out and a walk pushed Williams’ pitch count to its final number, Hunter Gaddis took the mound to close out the 4-1 win.
Williams almost tossed the first no-hitter for the Guardians in 44 years, and it was just the second time the franchise swept any of the New York teams on the road in almost four decades.
Prior to the series, the Guardians had never won a game at Citi Field.
The Guardians are playing their best baseball of the season right now.
They are 5-1 in August to climb in the AL Wild Card race, and they will continue to have a somewhat forgiving schedule.
They’re now looking at a three-game road series against the lowly Chicago White Sox.
