The Cleveland Guardians have had their fair share of iconic moments. While they’re not the winningest franchise in baseball history, they’ve had some signature wins.
Notably, that includes an iconic route of the New York Yankees. That’s why former Guardians superstar Omar Vizquel took to social media to remember that day. Earlier on Sunday, the Venezuelan legend recalled the time he had six hits to help the Guardians take down the Bronx Bombers on the road.
The Guardians won 22-0 in one of the most lopsided games in professional baseball history.
“This #TBT back in 2004 with 6 Hits with the @CleGuardians we won 22-0 vs the Yankees in NY. What a great memory! #Thankful Hoy recordando los 6 Hits vs los Yankees en la 2004 en NY. Agradecido!” Vizquel posted on X.
While not known for his offensive prowess, Vizquel always came through in big moments. His silk-like hands on defense and ability to make impossible throws made him one of the most iconic shortstops of his generation, not to mention one of the most exciting players to watch in Guardians franchise history.
The Guardians have a long and successful history of elite shortstop play, which is also why the bar always seems to be quite high at the position. Maybe, somewhere down the line, star prospect Angel Genao will join the long list of superstar shortstops in Guardians history. He certainly has that type of potential and physical tools to do so. Now, the team needs to make sure to replicate this type of offensive performance more often.
While they won’t score 22 runs every day, they must be much better than they were last season when they managed to make the playoffs despite having one of the three-worst offenses in professional baseball.
