Cleveland Guardians fans’ worst fear became a reality on Saturday afternoon as the Guards opened the ALDS with a 3-0 defeat at the hands of the Chicago White Sox. The long layoff proved to be damning and the offense was lifeless all afternoon, as it has been too many times in big games over the past few years.
Five White Sox pitchers surrendered three hits and five walks in the shutout. Cleveland had two great opportunities to score when they loaded the bases in both the third and fourth innings, but the Guardians mustered next to nothing on offense after that and were dominated by Grant Taylor, who cooked up a four-inning save.
Starting catcher Austin Hedges walked and struck out in his two plate appearances and spoke about the game afterwards. He didn’t mince his words and stated that this team is better than what it showed on Saturday in a clip shared by Mason Horodyski of WEWS.
“It’s a 5-game series for a reason. That stunk. We’re a better team than that. But anytime we give up 3 runs, we usually expect to win. But, I wouldn’t say deflating. It’s a loss. We got to win 3 of the next 4,” said Hedges.

These two teams fought tooth and nail all season and in so many ways, were mirror images of one another. It would only be fitting for this series to go five games after the Guardians went 6-7 against their division rivals in the regular season.
As similar as they are, these two teams have different strengths. Cleveland likes to win with pitching and Chicago likes to open things up and slug it out, so Chicago winning Game 1 3-0 is out of character for both sides.
Every game is crucial in October, but the Guardians are far from finished. They will now have another day off before turning to Gavin Williams for a must-win Game 2 on Monday.
