Progressive Field has generated plenty of excitement this summer, and much of it centers around a young pitcher who has transformed from raw talent into a legitimate weapon.
The Cleveland Guardians have watched right-hander Gavin Williams evolve from a hard-throwing prospect into something much more complete.
Catcher Austin Hedges recently praised Williams’ development, pointing to the strides the 25-year-old has made since entering the league.
“He’s got all the talent in the world. The big body, and he can throw a hundred miles an hour, but he kind of came into the league as a guy that was just talented, that could throw hard, and he’s really blossomed into a pitcher, like an all-around pitcher. He’s got six, seven pitches he’s working with. The sky’s the limit for this kid,” Hedges said.

Williams nearly threw a no-hitter against the New York Mets in early August.
Juan Soto broke it up with a solo home run in the ninth inning, but the outing showcased just how far Williams has come.
The numbers back up the praise. Williams has posted a 1.63 ERA over his last six starts, showing remarkable improvement in command and composure.
He still leads the league with 66 walks, but he has learned to limit damage when he gets into trouble.
Manager Stephen Vogt has noticed the difference in Williams’ approach after difficult innings.
The pitcher’s work ethic, combined with guidance from Hedges, has helped him handle pressure situations much better than earlier in his career.
Williams has collected seven wins with a 3.38 ERA since returning from injury.
He has been logging career-high pitch counts and approaching milestones not seen since Len Barker’s perfect game in 1981.
With Cleveland fighting for a wild card spot, Williams has become a crucial piece in their postseason push and a potential cornerstone for the future.
