The discussion around the Cleveland Guardians during the weekend and on Monday centered around the eternal rest vs. rhythm debate before a playoff series. Losing the AL Division Series opener against the Chicago White Sox certainly made things worse.
We have all talked about the Guardians’ lack of offense in Game 1, how they were limited to three hits, the White Sox’s unconventional, yet wildly impressive pitching strategy, and many other topics. All of that is now secondary: all Cleveland needs is a win on Monday. Nothing more, nothing less.
It could be an ugly one, or a blowout. It could be a walk-off victory, or a back-and-forth affair: it doesn’t really matter. All that matters is that the Guardians finish with more runs than the White Sox in Monday’s Game 2.
Analyst Tony Rizzo is certainly not panicking, much like many of his colleagues.
“I’m not gonna panic. We could do the rest vs. rust, but you gotta win today. If you don’t win today, you’re done. Messick pitched well. He did. They didn’t score a run. They shut you out with a bullpen game. Five pitchers shut you out. It’s not like we were facing Greg Maddux,” Rizzo said.

No, the Guardians weren’t facing Greg Maddux, but the White Sox certainly recreated him, at least for a day. Cleveland’s hitters certainly made Chicago look good on the mound: they looked out of sync and overpowered thoughtout Game 1.
The Guardians’ main job on Monday is trying to make sure that doesn’t happen again. Cleveland won’t win many games if they rack up just three hits, which is what happened on Saturday.
They will have Gavin Williams on the mound, and that’s awfully encouraging given how well he has pitched this year. Beyond that, everything is a mystery. That’s exactly why it’s so important to get a win on Monday, no matter how it comes.
If Chicago wins on Monday, the Guardians’ outlook will be a grim one. Very few squads have come back from a 0-2 hole in a best-of-five series, although it’s certainly not impossible.
