Guardians May Have Lost A Promising Prospect In Farm System

There is going to be a great deal of activity around baseball in the next two weeks, with the MLB trade deadline arriving Aug. 3. The Cleveland Guardians could have a major role as potential buyers in the midst of a very tight AL playoff race.

Leading up to that, there will be some maneuvering by teams that is not easily seen at first glance. In fact, Cleveland was recently involved in an interesting transaction.

The Guardians may have lost a promising prospect in their farm system, as outfielder Wuilfredo Antunez signed a two-year minor league contract with the Philadelphia Phillies.

“Though uncommon, a two-year minor league contract provides stability for both player and organization while allowing the Phillies to see whether Antunez can regain the momentum he enjoyed last season as he bats .196 this season. That (right shoulder tendinitis) injury interrupted what appeared to be some important development for the young outfielder, as he has struggled this season. If Antunez can recapture the trajectory that made him a favorite prospect in the Guardians system, he could move up the Phillies ladder before the end of next season,” Peter Chawaga of Forbes wrote.

Antunez was coming off a 2025 minor league season when he hit 18 home runs and posted an .856 OPS playing for Single-A Lake County and Double-A Akron in Cleveland’s system. He earned a spot in the Arizona Fall League, but he lasted just two games before the shoulder issue sidelined him, and it may have carried over into this season at Akron.

In 66 games, he had a slash line of .196/.249/.396, with 12 home runs and 89 strikeouts in 260 at-bats. Antunez was released on July 12, a move that the move corresponded with the promotion of outfielders Ryan Cesarini, Aaron Walton and Nolan Schubart to Akron from Lake County.

Antunez signed with the Phillies organization five days later, and he is currently playing for High-A Jersey Shore. He had three hits in 10 at-bats over his first three games.

An international free agent signing in 2019 and worked his way up through the Cleveland system to the point he was invited to spring training this year. He was rated as the Guardians’ No. 27 overall prospect by MLB.com in 2023, but he did not crack the top 30 the past three years.

Sometimes, it simply doesn’t work out for a prospect within a particular system, for any number of reasons, but, fortunately, there are plenty of opportunities around the game for someone like Antunez to get another chance to prove himself and continue his journey toward the major leagues.
