The Cleveland Guardians have been the dominant team in the AL Central for the past decade, so it should be no surprise that they are about to enter the second half of the 2026 season tied for first place in the division. The surprise comes from the team they are currently tied with.
Coming off back-to-back 100-loss seasons, the Chicago White Sox were 35-1 long shots to win the AL Central this year. But they have far exceeded expectations, and with a 50-45 record, they technically have a microscopic winning percentage lead over the Guardians, who are 51-46.
With the Minnesota Twins and Detroit Tigers making up ground in the standings before the All-Star break, it could be a potential four-team battle down the stretch. That’s not even mentioning the other teams in the running for the three AL wild cards.
Guardians catcher Austin Hedges recently weighed in on the tight AL playoff race, saying it should be very entertaining from now until late September.
“It’s great for the fans,” Hedges said. “Any team can beat any team on any given night, and it’s just who is going to play a better game of baseball.”
Entering play on Friday, there are eight American League teams within 6.5 games of each other competing for the final two wild-card berths, behind the leading New York Yankees. That includes the Twins, who are tied with the Seattle Mariners for the third and final spot, just one-half game ahead of the Boston Red Sox, 1.5 games ahead of the Houston Astros, two games ahead of the Baltimore Orioles, and 2.5 games ahead of the reigning AL champion Toronto Blue Jays.
Rounding out the legitimate contenders are the Tigers, who are 3.5 games behind the final playoff spot. Detroit is 6.5 games behind Cleveland and Chicago in the AL Central, but the Tigers are seen by some as the likely division winner.
The outlook for the entire American League race could hinge on whether the Tigers decide to trade away ace pitcher Tarik Skubal before the Aug. 3 deadline. That’s especially true if he is dealt to another AL contender.
The Guardians are in a good position to make moves to improve at the deadline, which could alter the race in a big way as well.
