The trade deadline is closer than it appears. Teams have until August 3 to complete deals, so the next couple of weeks will be filled with rumors and, hopefully, some of them come to fruition.
For the Cleveland Guardians, the deadline represents a perfect opportunity to improve the roster. They are currently 52-48, one game behind the Chicago White Sox in the fight for the AL Central, so certain areas of the roster could use an upgrade.
Rumors have recently linked the Guardians with a Francisco Lindor reunion. The Mets have apparently left the door open for any enquiries on the star shortstop, who had an incredibly productive stint in Cleveland from 2015 to 2020.
Analyst Gabrielle Goudy, however, doesn’t think the Guardians need Lindor because they have Brayan Rocchio.
“I think Rocchio is a better player than Lindor right now by every metric. Francisco Lindor hasn’t been doing anything, so I’m out on that. I don’t know if he’s gonna fit vibe-wise. Just doesn’t seem like it’s working out like that,” Goudy said.

Lindor has been plagued by wrist and calf injuries this season, so that has obviously affected his performance. When he has been on the field, he has slashed a disappointing .220/.304/.390 with six homers, two steals, and a 95 wRC+ in 43 games, with 0.8 fWAR.
That’s obviously well below his lofty standards. A healthy Lindor is much, much better than that, but he is also aging, at 32, and makes well over $30 million per year. Unless the Mets eat a lot of salary, it won’t happen.
Rocchio, on the other hand, is hitting a career-best .272 with a 109 wRC+, eight homers, 15 stolen bases, elite defense, and 2.9 fWAR in 97 games. Lindor has obviously had the better and more decorated career, but it’s hard to argue that Rocchio has had the better 2026 by a wide margin.
At this point, the Guardians have many holes and needs all over the roster, but middle infield doesn’t seem to be one of them, as they have Rocchio and All-Star rookie Travis Bazzana. Unless they are willing to change the latter’s position this year and absorb significant salary, the Guardians likely won’t be acquiring Lindor.
