Two rookies have completely changed the Cleveland Guardians’ offense this year: second baseman Travis Bazzana and outfielder Chase DeLauter. Yes, the team has also enjoyed more breakouts all around the roster, but these two have given manager Stephen Vogt a couple of high-upside hitters with many traits and precious few weaknesses.
DeLauter carried the Guardians’ offense in the first week or so, and has kept swinging a steady, productive bat over the course of the season. Bazzana, who has now graduated to leadoff duties, has never ceased raking ever since he made his MLB debut in late April.
The two young stars represent the future for the Guardians, but not just that. They are contributors right now and have performed well enough to create considerable expectations around them.
Bazzana had high praise for his teammate.
“We got to know each other better throughout the offseason and in January working together. It’s different. I’ve seen him do some pretty incredible things. He’s going to be great for a long time. Chase is one of the most skilled and athletic and powerful baseball players I’ve ever seen,” Bazzana said, per News 5 Cleveland’s Mason Horodyski.

“He shows up every day, has competitive at bats, works the box, like doesn't swing in balls, hits the strikes hard. I mean, what more can you ask for?”

DeLauter’s short, compact swing has resulted in seven home runs and a 121 wRC+. He also has more walks than strikeouts, the sign of a really mature hitter.
Bazzana has been even more impressive, albeit in a shorter sample. He is slashing a solid .302/.407/.458 with three home runs, seven stolen bases, and a 148 wRC+. He is really having a good time out there, and it shows.
That gorgeous OBP, plus his slugging ability, have been real assets at the top of the Guardians’ lineup, making things happen for the rest of his teammates. DeLauter, in fact, has been one of the hitters enjoying having Bazzana as the leadoff guy.
The two former first-rounders share more than just draft pedigree. They share a common goal, which is returning that World Series trophy to Cleveland after 78 years. They are aware of their talent, yes, but also of the needs of the team and the organization, and both are mature beyond their years.
They developed a bond in the offseason and are now more than just teammates. Bazzana and DeLauter are a breath of fresh air for Guardians fans.
